hey everybody its premier gal here and
what have you guys reached out to me on
Instagram asking me if I could do a
tutorial on the orange and teal look
inside of Adobe Premiere Pro and so I
went on YouTube and search to see what
else was out there
I found tons of different tutorials on
this orange and teal look but most of
them require some sort of purchase for a
plug-in or a lot which is like a lookup
table that you have to buy so I was like
there has to be a way to do this inside
a premier Pro without a plugin so I did
my research and I came up with this
tutorial and so no plugin required just
Premiere Pro and millimetric color panel
and so the goal of this video for me is
just to take out that intimidation
factor when it comes to color grading
because when people say color grading it
is a little intimidating if you're just
used to being an editor and you don't
know really what to do when you open up
that lumetri color panel so I hope to
take away that intimidation factor and
also you know just give you sort of the
general tools so you can become color
grading channel so let's go ahead and
dive in inside of my Premiere Pro
timeline I have this shot of the Golden
Gate Bridge with a cargo ship and it
looks okay but it doesn't really have
that wow factor so let's give it a wow
factor with the orange and teal look so
to kick things off first go up to window
and select workspaces and then select
the color workspace this will open up
the luma tree color panel now from the
project panel let's create a new
adjustment layer and drag that layer on
top of the video clip in your timeline
the adjustment layer will be the layer
we will apply the effects to in the
video clip underneath it will reflect
the effects we apply to the adjustment
layer so now let's start painting our
image with the color wheels tab in the
lumetri color panel on the right
the key for orange and teal is that it
creates a beautiful golden our look kind
of like a sunset by using the power of
complementary colors orange and teal are
complementary colors because teal is a
shade of blue you can see in the color
wheels that the complementary colors are
opposite each other the orange is across
from the blue and the yellow across from
the purple etc so we want to build
contrast between complementary colors so
for the shadows let's move this white
target down to the teal color just
slightly so what's the opposite of a
shadow will highlights of course which
are all the light areas of the image so
in the highlight circle let's move the
white target more towards the orange
this is where we start to see the
beginnings of the orange and teal effect
now let's move on to the mid-tones which
is all the light in between the
highlights and the shadows let's add
just the very slightest bit of orange
and red in there by moving the white
target up a bit if we do too much you
will see it looks way too orange so
let's bring it down so you just get a
slight hint of orange now let's move on
to the curves tab specifically the
hue/saturation controls this will enable
us to enhance the saturation of any hue
now hue is just a fancy word for color
by the way so really all we are doing
here is enhancing the colors in our case
we want to enhance the orange and the
blues so let's start by enhancing the
blues
to do that easily all you need to do is
select the blue and teal circles just
below the large circle and then you can
adjust these points that were just
automatically put on the circle further
by dragging them into place to create a
kind of outlet around the blue teal area
okay and I'm going to move them more out
towards the edge of the curve to include
more of the teal color now direct
opposite of the spectrum is orange and I
want to make the Golden Gate Bridge and
all the other orange or red parts of
this image
little bit more saturated so let's go
ahead and click on that tiny little red
circle beneath the large circle and now
you can move these points into the more
orange area and you can click on the
line to add another point if you like so
the idea here is to create an outlet
around the orange in the red area and
you can see that as we do this the
golden gate gets a bit richer with color
and I really really like the way this
looks now so now let's say you want to
add a bit of a faded film look I know
that a lot of people are into this
lately you can do this by going to the
creative tab and you can drag the slider
to the right to achieve a faded film
look now 100 is a bit too much faded for
me so I'm going to bring it back down to
30
lastly you can go up to the basic
correction tab and here we can increase
the contrast slightly to create more
contrast between the colors and then you
can also go down to blacks and slightly
crush the blacks by moving the slider to
the left
basically crushing the blacks means that
you are removing all the light from the
darker black areas of the image to make
the lighter areas pop more now I think
minus 100 is way too much so I'm going
to change it to around minus 15 now I
think that looks great so now we have
our newly painted orange and teal color
grade let me play it back and turn the
adjustment layer on and off so you can
see what it looked like before and after
you can see that it's just much more
richer and has more of a sunset like
look it's really looking pretty so now
if you want to save this as a preset you
absolutely can do that just go over to
the effects controls and right click on
new metric color and then hit save
preset and let's give it the name orange
and teal now if you have another clip
that you want to apply it to just head
on over to your effects tab go to
presets and drag and drop your orange
and teal preset on top of the other clip
also every clip is different so after
you apply this preset you still may need
to go back into the lumetri color panel
and make some further adjustments
depending on how the clip looks after
all it's just an art and so that's it
