on to 7 video editing techniques
Hey everybody and welcome back to Gal in
this video I'm showing you 7 awesome
video editing techniques that you can
apply to your storytelling because
editing is about building your story so
you have a script you may be making a
film and these techniques I'm about to
show you may not be written down in the
script but there are tools that you can
apply to engage and build your story up
more so I'll be using Premiere Pro to
show you these edits but a lot of the
techniques I'll show you can be applied
to pretty much any editing software that
you're working in so without further ado
let's go ahead and jump on in first up
is the match cut and this is a match on
action or a match through the scene you
can see here that the scene cuts all the
sudden or dissolves into a new scene
that matches the exact same composition
so here I have a similar use just an
everyday use of me clapping and
transporting myself into a new scene
just by clapping and matching on action
with one simple cut the same can be done
by throwing an object up and then you
can catch this object in a different
scene so it's very easy to do you can do
it by a match on the composition or a
match on action and next up is the jump
cut the jump cut is literally cutting
out frames of one single camera to show
the passing of time or just to cut out
boring parts to get to the setup quicker
so you see I'm setting up this equipment
and I'm jump cutting because I'm cutting
out moments of time in the timeline here
you can see it's a very long clip of me
setting up equipment and I don't need to
show all of it so to help speed up this
clip I basically am going to cut out
sections or frames of this long clip so
that way it moves quicker so I'm just
going to quickly go through here and
scrub through and cut out the parts that
I don't think are necessary for a
creative effect and that is how you do
the jump cut
this is a J cut so here is clip A in the
clouds here and over here this is clip
B with me sleeping at the desk the
audio from clip be here as well as the
sound effect that's a part of this scene
starts in clip A so these clips here are
part of clip B so a J cut is when the
clip B audio starts in clip A now you've
probably done this a lot but it's
actually called a J cut primarily
because of the shape so if you look at
this shape here it kind of looks like a
J so if we play this back you can see
what it looks like in action so
basically I'm making this tutorial and I
need you to record yourself pretending
to be on the phone with me and it would
just be a part of the tutorial are you
down yeah girl
I'm literally recording this right now
and L cut is very similar to the J cut
it is like the sister it's just
backwards so basically the audio from
clip A here bleeds into and bridges into
clip B so in this clip I am talking on
the phone and as it cuts to Kitty here
listening you still hear my audio so you
can see clip A here is in green and
cliff B is in yellow so if I play it
back you can hear my voice is still
playing during clip B self pretending
to be on the phone with me and it would
just be a part of the tutorial are you
down yeah girl I'm literally recording
this right now a smash cut splices to
scenes that may seem unrelated
together to create a contrast so the kid
coloring in the book then suddenly
cutting to the guy waking up in a panic
creates this nice contrast now stranger
things is full of awesome smash cuts so I
highly recommend keeping an eye out for
them in the next season cross cutting is
a way to bring together two different
scenes that are happening at the same
time so here in Inception you have the
dream sequence happening and then it's
cutting between reality when they're in
the van so this is a great example of
cross cutting so something to think
about when you're editing your next film
cutting on action is cutting together
multiple angles of the same action at
once so it relies on continuity when
this boxer hear kicks his leg up here in
this scene I want to cut into a closer
shot where he's doing the same action so
here he ends with his leg up in the
second shot he also kicks so right
around here I want this clip to start so
I'm just gonna roll this at it back and
then delete the space between these two
clips and now when we play it back it's
like he kicked the same moment so that's
a cut on action and then again here he
hits the bag at the end of this clip on
the third clip here he punches with his
right arm here in the bag so I can roll
this edit back delete this space here
and now it's a seamless cutting on
action so those are the 7 editing
techniques I wanted to share with you of
course there are so many different
techniques that you guys can use when
you're editing but now you guys know
what they're called and you may have
been using them and you didn't know how
to specify them when you were trying to
communicate with somebody so let me know
if you guys have any questions about
these editing techniques leave a comment
below also thanks again to Squarespace
for supporting this video if you
guys want to build your own portfolios
