so today I'm gonna teach you how to
straighten out the wheel on your bicycle
which is called truing without the use
of a truing stand now I'm going to show
you at the truing stand first do you
understand the concept the first thing
you need is a spoke wrench there's the
only special tool you're going to need
you might already have a spoke wrench
from the set of bike tools this is the
best kind that that's what a
professional would use they usually come
in sets of three but also a lot of multi
tools have spoke wrenches they usually
look like little slots here's a
Leatherman mako you can see those two
little slots at the end so if you have a
bike tool with those little slots
chances are it's a spoke wrench now
envision a rim from the outside and
imagine those little silver nipples
screw in through the outside of the rim
because they actually do so when you're
tightening spoke you have to envision it
in that way so some spokes are going to
pull the rim to the left some are going
to pull it to the right you can tell by
running your hand up the spoke and
seeing what side of the hub it's
connected to um here we have a spoke
that's connect to the left side of the
hub if you tighten it it's gonna pull
the rim to the left the opposite is true
for a spoke that's attached to the other
side of log now a concept of a real
truing stand is you have these pins that
you can move really close to the wheel
and you can see you know what part of
the rim it's hitting so you know that
the bend is that way so there I just
tightened a spoke that was connected to
the right side of the hub to pull the
rim away from the left pin now you
should set the pins to that it's just
hitting one of the bends in the rim the
biggest Bend you can find once you've
taken care of those big bends you can
move on to smaller and smaller bends
each time just a quarter turn on the
spoke wrench
let's do without a truing stand for that
you're going to need trust the old zip
tie attach a zip tie to the chain save
the bicycle cut it to size and then you
can rotate it move it closer further
away from the rim as needed
now you don't want it to be just rubbing
against the rim you want to not be
touching the rim at all then spin the
wheel and keep moving it in little by
little until it just barely scratches
one spot on the rim that's the spot
that's bent the most and you can tighten
the spoke that's attached to the
opposite side of the hub from that bend
to move it out of the way now again
you're only gonna want to tighten that
spoke a quarter turn then give it
another rotation and see if it hits you
can give it another quarter turn if it
still hits but really you don't want to
go much further than that spoke nipples
are notorious for stripping out
especially if you're using the wrong
tool or over tightening them now some
bends are gonna be too big for you to
get out through truly I recommend that
you still try because if you can't get
the bend out you're gonna have to buy a
new rim anyway so you might as well just
fuck it up
go down trying anyway you can see here
that it's hitting the zip ties so I'm
tightening spokes that are in the
opposite side of the hub to pull the rim
in the other direction now what about
the front wheel zip tied to the fork I
don't even have to cut it down
in fact I'll give you guys a close-up
here so that you can see how close it is
pretty much just as effective as at
ruling stand as long as you're not doing
anything fancy so anyway I left links in
the description in case you want some
real spoke branches also a truing stand
if you feel like spending 70 bucks on
something that'll actually do the job
the right way anyway thanks for watching
don't fuck up your wheels and if you
want a professional to do it it's only
15 dollars usually at your local bike
shop thanks for watching
